A few quick notes on San Antonio
It was a working trip, but that doesn't mean I didn't have fun.
I went for the National Writing Project meeting/NCTE convention.
Book Nerd Heaven
After making sure I attended the meetings that needed attending, I found out when some the authors I wanted to see would be signing and speaking. I met OR Melling, Lauren Myracle, & Daniel Waters and they were all kind enough to let me get pictures with them (And I don't have that 'deer-in-headlights' look!).
I read their blogs and told them through comments that I hoped to see them at the convention. I completely fan-girled out when I told them who I was (in respect to reading their blogs) and they "knew" who I was. (I was even given a shout out in this blog about his trip-ack! Does this make me famous? even semi-so?)
Seriously though, Go read these authors' books. They really are some of my favorites.
I got tons of books for my library. Many of the books won't be out until sometime next year and are Advance reader copies (also known as arcs). What's interesting is that it was bc of arcs that I picked up at previous conventions that I discovered these authors to begin with.
And just let me say, getting all of the books home took some creative packing....
Twilight
Lana and I were afraid we were going to miss getting to see Twilight but, after many hilarious tries, we were able to call and get tickets to the midnight showing. When we were in the hotel lobby waiting on our taxi to the cinema Harvey Daniels walks in(he is an author of, among other things, books on literature circles that I have used). Lana yells, "There's Harvey Daniels!" and he turns to see what crazy person knows his name. He laughs and says " you are NOT wearing Twilight shirts....."
Oh yes we were.
He also told us he hopes to see the movie sometime, too. As did the bellman at the hotel as we were leaving. So funny.
We were only about two blocks from the Alamo, which we discovered when we were sent the wrong direction looking for the Grand Hyatt hotel. It was supposed to have been in the 70s while we were there but a cold front came through and it ended up being in the 50s. I really didn't pack for cooler weather and got a little cold when we explored some at night. It was a pretty place though.

Politics
I hate that the choices we have are the only ones we got.
I hate the media has shoved this election down our throats for so long that I have considered not even voting
(I'm going to vote for a president, but only because I'll already be there to vote in the local elections-which is the only reason I registered recently)
I hate that people automatically assume that
just bc I'm a woman, I'll vote for_________
just bc I'm from the south, I'll vote for________
just bc I believe in God, I'll vote for________
just bc I am a teacher, I'll vote for________
Honestly, I don't even know for sure who I am voting for yet (and I've flip-flopped many times so far) and I sure as heck won't be telling anyone, nor will I be swayed by the media or anyone else.
Don't assume that you know anything about my political, religious, or personal beliefs. It just might surprise you to learn the truth.

saw it, love it, need it
We saw it Sundday in Clarksville. I LOVED IT! I didn't care for all the close ups and the shaky cameras (at one point you could almost count the nose hairs on one of the actors), but it was almost like being there at the Nederlander.
I've seen the show a few times so I know when to stifle my tears. There are quite a few scenes that are tissue worthy. I did ok until the end when the many of the original Rent actors came out to sing Seasons of Love with the current cast. I lost it. Bawled like baby. I was almost holding my breath to keep from audibly sobbing.
I have heard a rumor that they will be releasing this on dvd in a few months. WOOOO! Hopefully it'll be before Christmas so we can watch that Christmas night!
Here is our group today-minus Mark, the photographer (we realized that this is the same group that saw Rent in Memphis last November.)

Quick entry
I feel like I have been neglecting this blog lately. Once school starts I get so busy and not much new happens. I have a good group of 7th graders this year (even if some of them cant divide! *headdesk*) and the fall is always busy getting ready for marching band contests to start.
I will be participating in a potentially really cool project starting Sept 1. A group of women from around the world will be participating in a picture-a-day project for a year. once it gets going I'll post the link. I think it's going to be great.
I just read that Stephenie Meyer is putting off writing the rest of Midnight Sun indefinitely. This makes me sad and while I can completely understand her point of view, I am upset that I won't be able to feed my addiction and get more from Edward's perspective. I really hope she reconsiders.
that's all for now!

Secrets and weddings and a little Twilight thrown in
Mark went to get our pizza sub at the local pizza place last night. He called on the way back and says "so are you soley responsible for everyone in this town being obsessed with Twilight?" (well, yeah, I sorta am) My cousin works at the pizza place and started talking to Mark about the book then the owner chimed in and they had a 5 minute discussion about it....I think it's great!
Anyway...
Today Mark and I went to Paducah for a friend's wedding. The wedding wasn't until 7 so we went on up early to plunder around the town some. Mark found out that the Postsecret exhibit was going on at one of the art centers down town. I love postsecret so I had to go! We werent allowed to take pictures in there, but the exhibit was cool. We also went into a comic book store. Mark found the graphic novel that Wanted was based on and I got some multi-sided die that I plan to somehow use in my math class.
We ate at a little Mexican place called Tribeca. I ordered the Tribeca burrito. That thing was HUGE! I ate maybe half. The waiter stopped by at one point and said, "That's a huge burrito, isn't it? I guess I should have warned you." I'd say!
The wedding was outside, which really isnt fun during the humid days of summer....but it was a short, sweet wedding. We left right before they cut the cake (long drive home, didn't want to wait any longer) I love wedding cake so I was disappointed I missed out. (insert long dramatic sigh)
When we got home we discovered that the cat had pooped in the middle of the little bathroom floor. She was mad at us for keeping her in while we were gone and mad that her litter wasn't pristinely new. I hope I don't discover that she has peed somewhere in the house...
I'm tired and need to go to bed, but I had a frappucino type drink on the way home and I forgot to ask for one with low sugar.....

I can ride my bike with no handebars, no handlebars
*Squeak!*
I have been on the lookout for a bike for a while now but didn't know what to get, blah blah blah. So I asked a coworker who bikes. She suggested against Wal-Mart since they usually don't have high quality bikes (or anything else for that matter). The only problem is that there are no bike shops close by. When Mark & I went to Murfreesboro for a wedding a month ago we found a bike shop close to where the wedding took place so we went in to look around.
The guy who helped us that day, Jeremy, was super nice. He didn't treat us like idiots as we asked all kinds of questions. He is going to college on a biking scholarship and is on the competitive mountain bike team (didn't know a thing existed) and he was so knowedgable about anything we asked. Since we wouldnt be able get the bikes home then we told him we'd come back when we could.
When we came in this time I was glad to see Jeremy again and he remembered us. He let us take the bikes for a test ride around the block. This is my bike- except in white and green:
My rump is going to have to get used to the saddle, but I bought some padded bike shorts. They feel really weird on because of the extra bulk but I think my rear end will thank me in the long run. My bike has the regular platform pedals. I don't feel confident enough for the clipless ones yet. I'm afraid I'll kill myself by forgetting my foot is attached to the pedal when I stop. And we added a water bottle holder (called a cage). OH, and I got a bike helmet. (I rather like my brain and don't prefer it to be damaged)
I'm excited. If you see me, or as Kari calls me-the safe dork- riding around the neighborhood, please don't run me over.

Oh.my.GAWD!
2. I found out today that in order to teach algebra (that I one day hope to do) I will ALSO have to go to a week long training this summer that costs $550. I am hoping that the school will pay all or some of that. (and there goes one moreweek of my summer break...)
3. One of the other teachers that went today said her 13 year old daughter went to the doctor for a checkup and, GET THIS, he told the THIRTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL, who is quite slim and tall, that she was HEAVIER than 75% of the girls her age.W.T.F???
Is he TRYING to push this girl into an eating disoder? I literally want to go punch this doctor in the face. What is he thinking telling a kid that? idiot.

"Stop fixing your body. It was never broken"
I want to see this movie. It is about America's obsession with "beauty". The quote that is my title is from Eve Ensler (love her books!)
Unfortunately, the cinema here won't show it (don't even get me started on that) and somehow I'm betting that our Blockbuster won't carry it, either.
Time to get a Netflix account......

My Brain still hurts
Why, you ask?
Because I am a math nerd and, well, I need another thing to add to my nerddom, nerdhood, nerdiness, whatever....
No, really because I *heard* that with passing the math praxis I *might* be able to one day teach algebra. And being the good math nerd that I am I jumped on that.
(Ok, kiddos, don't get too excited. as of right now I am still teaching 7th grade math. There is NO talk of me teaching anything else at the moment)
Anyway, the test was today. Ask mark, kari, or brandy and they can tell you that I was a lil bit nervous this week. I pulled out the algebra I and 8th grade math books to review anything that I might have forgotten. I looked at online practice tests. Most of the stuff I knew. A few things I had to go back and refresh my memory on (factoring quadratic trinomials, anyone?). I felt a little like Hermione. All week I kept pulling out the book or my notes and looking up a formula or working out 'one more problem'. A couple of times I freaked and drew a blank and ended up sending Kari a txt of the problem. (and it was usually a stupid mistake on my part as to why I missed it)
This morning I doubled checked ONE MORE TIME that I had my admittance ticket, my 2 pencils (no mechanical ones dangit), my ink pens for the constructed response questions (for math? WHY do I have to use a pen? yes, there were a few scribbles on my answer sheet), and my calculator. We got to the test place early and there was already quite a few people waiting. I got checked in, sent to the correct room, lined my pencils up ready to go, and mentally went through some of the formulas that I had gone over in the car. *coughHermionecough*
The test was two hours. 40 multiple choice questions and 3 constructed response (CR). CR problems mean they give me a problem and it has 4 or 5 parts to it that I have to not only work out, but explain how and why. (have you seen my handwriting when I am in a hurry?)
I think I got most of the 40 questions right. there were a few that I wasn't sure about and a couple that I had no idea how to do.*educated guess*
I started on the first of the three CR and did ok on the first two parts of it then completely drew a blank. As in - "I'm gonna throw up bc I have no idea" kind of blank. So I skipped it and went on. I had an hour at this point. Feverishly working, I got through the other two CR questions. (with only a little bit of BS-ing on them).
With 15 minutes to spare I came back to the first CR question and it was like a light bulb had gone off. I don't know if what I wrote was all correct, but I finished the last part about 30 seconds before time was up.
WHEW. I am still exhausted.
Now I have to wait four weeks for my results.
Now a little math humor
sigh.......
On another topic-I've decided to re-read all the Harry Potter books in sequence. It's been a while since I've read the first few. It's amazing to see how she tied the last one back to the first.

adolescence
And girls. Good lord, girls in middle and high school can be terrible. It's amazing how someone could be your best friend for years then one day turn on you. (and then later on going so far as to cheat with TWO of my boyfriends) Kinda messes relationships up for a while.
All of this comes up because of something my mother said to me. I was complaining that an another teacher was bugging me about an upcoming conference we have to go to and how she cornered me three times one day to talk about it. My mother says, "Sandi, quit complaining and be nice. She just likes you."
hmmm, see that's the problem. Because of the backstabbing and betrayal in middle school and high school I sometimes still have a problem letting people in. The part of me that was the adolescent thinks "But WHY does this person want to be my friend. What if they are just gathering information to use against me?"
I've always been a little, um, quirky. I have more confidence about that quirkiness now that I am older and couldn't really care less if someone likes me or not....but I guess that is from years of throwing up those walls to protect my feelings. However, the adolescent peeks through at times.
So tell me, dear readers (all one or two of you), do you have any stories from middle school or high school that you can't seem to "forgive and forget"?
Share them if you don't mind. Then let's have a big "letting go" celebration of some kind :)

I just found out something cool!
I just found out the OR Melling is going to be at the conference this year! A couple of years ago I picked up an advanced reader copy of her book The Summer King and completely fell in love with the world of faerie.
How exciting! I've never been to Texas before (heck, I've never been west of St. Louis) so this will be a fun trip for many reasons.

disadvantages of living in a small town
I went mostly looking for audiobooks.
I was disappointed. They had maybe three small shelves of audiobooks on cd. The rest were on cassette. I don't even think I own a working cassette player anymore. Of the cds they had, none were anything I was interested in.
So I decided to check out their selection of young adult novels.
Oh. my. Gosh.
I have a better library in my classroom than they have.
So I left. I didn't bother getting a library card. Such a nice building, such a pitiful library. How sad.

Now that summer is here I plan to plow through more of the books on my shelves at school (remember I have over 1100! I've read quite a few of them already) and fair warning, I will probably be reading the Twilight series AGAIN this summer since the 4th book is coming out Aug 2.

Hey, go buy this book!
You all know how much of a book nerd I am. I also love meeting authors. Well, now I know one personally! One of my friends has just published his first young adult novel. I got to read it a couple of months ago and am proud to say it is finally available for purchase. I recommend it and think you need to go buy it now!Click on amazon.com.
The book is called Son of the Sword:River of Doors by Wesley D Stein.
If you get the book, go by Wes' page and tell him about it (I dont think he'd mind)
(I am not being paid or even being asked to promote this book.)

NYC blog- day three
We had considered, for maybe 30 seconds, getting up early and standing outside the Today show. We vetoed that when we discovered how much walking we were going to be doing and how tired we were. So Monday we slept in. Which for Mark and me means about 8.
We went to Junior's restaurant for a late breakfast and then rode the subway as far as we could to the World Trade Center site. When I was here in March of 2007 there was a place where you could see a timeline and the names of the people who were killed. It was a touching tribute. This time there was none of that. They had closed it up and it looked like a regular construction site. Which I guess is what they are wanting.
We walked on to Battery Park. And our poor feet and legs were killing us. Here you can get on the ferry to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (for which the line was LOOOOOOONG and you have to pay.) We decided to go the cheap route and got on the FREE Staten Island ferry. We entered the station and got in with the huge crowd of people. I was surprised that so many people were waiting but the ferry was not even close to being full when we took off. While it doesnt stop at the Statue or Ellis Island, it goes right by them and provides good photo ops. its maybe a twenty to thirty minute boat ride to Staten Island. Everyone has to get off the ferry but we just walked around the station and got right back on. It's a neat experience.
Since the sub lines were shut down in this area they had a free shuttle bus back to the sub station. (thank goodness!) We got back to Times Square and saw that the line for Madame Tussauds wax museum wasnt long. The wax museum was a lot of fun (tho a little pricey at $29 each) It's worth doing. The first room was called something like Celebrity party. You look over a balcony at all the "stars" below. Kari said, "Hey there's George Bush" I didnt see him..and come to find out, she was talking about Dan Rather... I wont tell you who else she mistook while we were in there....I let her tell that story.
I had a lot of fun doing goofy poses with the wax people. We were hoping to see Orlando, but alas....
We ate supper at Hard Rock. They took our picture when we came in and then tried to sell it to us for about 20 bucks. Um, no thanks. the self portrait we took on the plane was better than that photo. BTW, if you are of age, you might want to rethink ordering a Huricane. I'll tell you that story in person one day.
We shopped a little more on Times Square. then walked to the Cold Stone Creamery that was close to the hotel. I have never seen so many people packed into a place to get ice cream before. I recommend Chocolate Devotion- chocolate ice cream, mini chocolate chips, fudge brownie, and chocolate syrup. SLURP!
We had to get up fairly early the next morning to check out. Our shuttle to the airport was 15 minutes late and I was about to freak. He finally got there and then drove like a maniac to pick up one more person and get us all to the airport. My head was already a little stuffy from allergies and my right ear didnt pop after we landed. I spent yesterday afternoon feeling like I had an earplug in one year. I'm glad to be home, but I still LOVE NY!
Mark said in my next career I should give walking tours of NYC.
A couple of tips for anyone interested:
1. Juno and 13 going on 30 are good-lengthed movies to watch on the plane to and from NY (thank you ipod)(one each way)
2. Invest in a subway map. the one we have is laminated and pocket sized. It was a life saver and we got pretty adept at reading it.
3. Wear a good pair of walking shoes. you will walk A LOT and there are few places to sit, especially in Times Square.
4. "Wi-Fi" is not really available everywhere. There were a couple places where we could pick it up, but very few. Mark suggests bringing a GPS.
5.The Staten Island ferry is a great way to see the statue of liberty if you dont want to get off at the statue or ellis island.
6. Be alert, but dont be afraid. Most people we asked for directions, etc were really nice about it. As with any trip you take-Just dont be stupid.
Hmm, There are probably more.
NYC blog-day two
This was the day we were going to see Rent!
Kari and I decked out in our Rent shirts and we all headed out to see Central Park. I was particularly interested in seeing the Belvidere Castle. It's not a "real" castle, and I think they used it as a weather station at one point. It is also referenced in the book Valiant, tho not by name.
We decided to give our feet a little rest and rode the subway to the park. We went down to the subway terminal and were trying to figure out how to buy metro cards, etc. the lady working in there gave us this exasperated look and opened a gate and forced us through. Great. now we have no metro card, what were we supposed to do?
We found another place to get them went through another gate where the lady was standing and asked how to get to central park. She told us and the other lady said, in a NY accent "Put your card back in your pocket and go back through that door we just let you through like two minutes ago. You are not paying today."
Wow, I thought they were being hateful at first and they were actually being nice to us!
We got to the park and walked and walked and walked. and took lots of pictures. We almost got lost because we came out at a different spot than we came in and couldnt find the subway entrance.
For lunch we ate at Heartland Brewery. I had eaten there before and knew mark would love it. Then we went and got in line to get into see Rent. The line was AROUND THE BUILDING! I was so excited bc 1 I love Rent and 2 I was finally getting to see it in NYC!
I will say- this cast didnt have the energy that the touring casts I've seen has. Dont get me wrong, it was great! (Especially the actors playing Collins, Angel, Maureen and Joanne) Tamyra Gray -from American Idol- was Mimi and she really didnt impress me much. The actor I saw in Nashville was better.
After seeing Rent we ventured on to the East Village. This is where a scene in Rent is set and the Life Cafe is where Jonathan Larson wrote a lot of the play. Some of the subway lines were shut down and we ended up getting off at a different place than intended. It was ok though. We walked from Canal street through Little Italy. It is really cool and if we had had more time we would have eaten somewhere there. I bought a purse from a street vendor there. I'll try to get a pic of it later.
We walked on to Ferrara bakery for cheesecake since it was on the way. OMG. If you are in the area go get cheesecake there! It's better than mine- and that's saying something :)
We then took the subway to the Life Cafe in the East Village. The Life Cafe is a MUST for any Rent fan. Our server was really slow but everything else was great-the food, the atmosphere. The owners got a box of tshirts in that were not going to be for sale yet but they sold them to us anyway. We were the first people to buy these shirts! Super nice people. We signed the Renthead registry, took lots of pictures and then walked back to the subway station. It was a tiny bit scary walking back in the dark. Our poor feet and legs were killing us by this point and we were glad to get back in the hotel.
Day three coming up. :)
NYC blog- day one
After sleeping Friday night on perhaps the worst pillows ever created, we dragged ourselves out of the hotel and got to the airport around 5ish. The flight was fine and as we got closer to NYC we couldn see the Statue of Liberty from the plane. even though I've seen it before it never fails to make me a little giddy. Mark and Kari were even excited (though Mark claims it was bc we were finally on solid ground)
I planned the trip through Orbitz.com and reserved shuttle service as well (this helped out alot). Once we got to the hotel we checked in but couldnt get in the room yet so we left our bags with the bellman. This is a great thing that the hotel does because we got there about 11:30 and weren't able to get into the room until after 3. we didnt want to drag our luggage around the city.
At first we walked to the theatre where Forbidden Broadway shows. But they were on hiatus (even though their website said it wasnt until Monday that they were going to be on hiatus) I was disappointed.
I had already planned out much of what we were going to do and had lots of google maps printed off. First we walked to Grand Central Station. Everyone needs to see this place. And find the Whispering wall. Two people stand in opposite corners facing the wall. you can hear the person clearly when they talk. It's really cool (check out this youtube video about Grand Central here)
We then ventured a little further to the NY Public Library. This building is immortalized in movies like Ghostbusters and Day After Tomorrow. Unfortunately they were closed so we couldnt peek inside.
We walked further to the Empire State Building. We didn't go up in it but took a few pics. And Chipotle was beside it. That's where we got possible the biggest burritos I've ever seen. We were all hungry by then so we ate there. Yum
We tried getting tickets to Lion King or Wicked but they were both sold out. We heard about a new musical called In the Heights that has been nominated for 13 Tony awards so we decided try to get tickets for it. It was a great show. It is based in the Washington Heights area. My favorite song from the show was No Me Diga. We had "obsturcted view" seats so we were able to get them for half price. There were only a couple of scenes that were we couldnt see that well. Otherwise- great seats.
We explored Times Square a bit. I was wearing a red and white striped shirt that i had changed in to for the evening. Some people in NY feel the need to comment on things to get your attention. One guy said to me "Hey I found Waldo!" I ignored him. What he doesn't know is that with my last name being what it is, I get that a lot. (rolling my eyes here). I also about squealed when I saw that gigantic New Kids on the Block billboard! I still want to see them in concert, I dont care how bad they might be.
We saw a girl who had on possibly the tightest shorts I have ever seen. Someone made the comment that they were so tight she had rear camel toe. Ouch. Those couldnt have been comfortable. And we wouldnt have noticed but she stood right in our faces while we were eating pizza at Famiglia's.
We were exhausted after getting up at 4 that morning and walking all over the place. it was probably midnight when we finally went to bed. A fun first day though!
(go check out my pictures in the album NYC 2008 if you've not done so already)
So the blog post wont be huge, I'll break this up into different posts. Day two coming up soon!
Here is a video of us trying to get a photo on the plane. We didnt realize it was set to video teehee

I missed it this morning. Don't think I didn't squee like my fifteen year old self just now when Joe started singing Please Dont Go Girl. That was my *favorite* New Kid song back in the day.
BTW- Go watch Prince Caspian!!!! It is really good. and Ben Barnes is REALLY cute (and OMG, when did the kid who plays Peter get cute?)

SUCCESS!
After visiting the inlaws yesterday, Mark and I went to the Rivergate mall in Nashville. I needed some new jeans and wanted a couple of tops.
I hate shopping. Mostly bc I cant find clothes that fit well. Most tops made for people with boobs look like maternity tops on me. No Thanks.
And jeans.... I faced the facts years ago- I have fat thighs. It's a genetic quirk of mine. Is it really so hard for clothing manufacturers to make jeans with a little more room in the thighs?
Apparently.
I have a couple pairs of jeans from Lane Bryant but once they switched to the weird color/number combination I can't find any that fit. (Blue 1? yellow 3? Red 1?) One day I tried on about 6 pairs of jeans before I gave up.
I decided to start at the anchor stores first- Dillards was the first store. I NEVER shop in Dillards. and I was to the point where I was just going to up-size....and truthfully, it was going to hurt my feelings if I had to (I'm just being honest here).
(Another gripe of mine is how nothing is STANDARD. One pair of pants in my size fits in the waist but not the thighs, another pair in my size cant be buttoned, another fits in the thighs but not the waist, honestly wtf?)
So when found the jeans section I grabbed several pairs of jeans in both the size I usually wear and some in the size larger. the first pair I tried on was too long (even though the were regulars) and a tad snug in the thigh (but were stretchy).
I tried on the larger size and they were too big in the waist.
I found some shorter lenght jeans in my size, tried them on and THEY FIT! They were DKNY brand (which is not something I would normally try on either.) I also got two shirts.
I couldn't believe it- that was all at the first store.
I didn't have any luck at the other stores. But I have a pair of jeans. I consider that success. :)

Welcome to the South
We like things deep fried here in the south. I haven't tried most things that are offered up as fried (like twinkies, snickers, bananas etc etc etc), partly because where I live I really can't get it and partly because I TRY not to eat a lot of fried foods.
However I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try the DEEP FRIED CHEESECAKE I saw advertised at the Strawberry festival parade that I went to with the marching band that I work with.
O.M.G
It looks a little like a burrito, but its pastry not tortilla, and it has the regular cheesecake goo on the inside. It is dribbled with caramel (you can get it topped with that or chocolate)
If you like cheesecake and you find yourself in a place where these are sold- GET ONE (it was a little expensive though- $6! but worth trying)

In related "welcome to the south" news:
This sign was posted in the Blockbuster today.
I shake my head at the fact that they felt the need to make this sign.....
also, this sign was posted in a local McDonalds
Yeah, we get 'em started early in the south....

I'm reading The Host by Stephenie Meyer now. If you decide to pick it up, keep in mind- it's not Twilight. It takes a little bit to get into and it is a tiny bit confusing at first until you realize the point of view it's told from. I like it so far :)
If you are reading it also, let me know.
also, in a couple of days, I will post a twilight-related treat that I made for my fellow Twilighters

Twilight~ Stephenie Meyer
Twilight audiobook~Stephenie Meyer Listened to when walking (I KNOW! I KNOW!)
Here's what I think is going on. If you know anything about faerie stories, you'll know that if you ever eat Faerie food then any real food you eat after that turns to ash in your mouth. That's what's going on with any book I try to read after Twilight. Nothing is as satisfying. Sure, I've read some fantastic books...but nothing lives up to the standard I have set after reading Twilight. Besides, it has EDWARD! (this picture from a set visit by Calicat. Read about it here at TwilightMoms)

Acquaintances, revisted
I was at a Title I conference yesterday and today. Here we visited sessions on how to improve our lowest performing students among other things.
BUT the sessions are not what this blog is about. There were teachers there from all over west tn. I saw two people who went to the same college I did. One was in almost every one of my eductation classes and is now a Supervisor of Instruction (more power to her, I have no desire to be in administration)
I also saw several teachers from my very first teaching job. Let me start at the beginning of this journey...
I student taught in first and 7th/8th grades in Henderson County (interesting tidbit- I NEVER wanted to teach middle school, now I love it!) After student teaching, I went all summer with no word on a job. I got a call from Perry Co schools to teach 2nd grade TWO DAYS before school started (I also got two other calls that same day). I found out the supervisor from my student teaching job put in a good word for me and that helped me get the job.
I liked teaching second grade, but it was so far from where I grew up and we were lonely there. After waiting until the last legal minute, the school board decided not to rehire any of their non tenured teachers so Mark and I moved back to my hometown, no jobs lined up. (I was hired at my current job soon after)
Flash forward to yesterday (or is that still a flash back?)
I saw several women that I recognized from Linden Elementary at the conference. I sat with them at one of the sessions and we chatted a little. I asked about some of the kids I had that year (they graduated last May!) One little girl I had named Jocelyn was someone I always wondered about. I found out she didnt graduate high school. this makes me sad.
I also saw the woman who was my mentor teacher that first year. I was so surprised! She is now the reading specialist at her school.
And I saw the woman who helped me get my first job. She was the speaker at the banquet last night. I never had the chance to thank her so I talked with her after it was over.
I am so glad that I got to go to the conference because I got to see so many people that I had lost contact with.
Im glad I am home now. Like a goof, I didnt take my laptop and I was starting to go through withdrawls...

This is what happens when I’m out of shape...
so I bowled yesterday and today I am paying for it. The muscles in my legs and backside are so sore! And I have either twisted my knees or just really worked those muscles too because the back of my knees scream at me every time i take a step after sitting for a while....
Today i took some students to a math contest and wore uncomfortable shoes that have rubbed blisters on my feet.
Tomorrow i have to walk a parade route with the band.....
shoot me now please......

a lil humor at my expense
I went to a small, private university in West TN called Freed Hardeman University. (Not that it's important but-It's a church of Christ school, I am no longer a member of that church.)
We did not have fraternities or sororities, but we had co-ed social clubs. I was in Alpha Tau Lambda. Every year the school had something called Makin' Music. They used this as a recruiting tool as well as a fundraiser. During this, the social clubs took songs and changed the lyrics to fit a 6-ish minute show. We practiced for weeks working on our songs and "choreography" (since the churches of Christ don't believe in dancing). We also had students who served as Hosts and Hostesses who sang numbers between club shows (it always reminds me of Makin Music when American idol has the contestants sing some medley all together)
Anyway, this video is from my FRESHMAN year in 1993 (please don't mention that was fifteen years ago!)
See if you can find me.
Here is our take on Romeo and Juliet. (we won first place in lyrics this year.)
Then the following year (that'd be 1994 for those of you keeping up), I was one of the directors of our show. I don't plan to upload this video but here's a group foto.....again, see if you can spot me!
A trip down memory lane......don't laugh too hard.

They're gone.....
but
now
they
are
gone
sigh...
on a different, yet equally annoying, note: I heard of an adult at my school who said about the Twilight books- "Those have vampires in them, they should be banned." AND "I hope they don't lead kids to do things like the Harry Potter books did'"
EXCUSE ME?!?
Luckily I wasnt in the room when she said this (I heard it second-hand, so it *might* be a misquote....but I *doubt* it)
Had *I* been in there I *would* have asked her what, exactly, that the Harry Potter books have caused kids to do (other than *read*) cuz, ya know, I *really* don't care if someone thinks less of me for challenging these kinds of statements.
(Ok, I'm done with the **s now)
Some people live itheir lives with such huge blinders on.
