The Summer King

i just finished reading The Summer King by OR Melling. It is EXCELLENT! A teen is asked to participate in a mission to help save Faerie (and that also might save her sister). The book is steeped in myth and legend both Faerie and Irish. Melling draws readers into the story in such a way to where one might become a believer in faries by the end.

Laurel doesnt believe in faries at the beginning, but her sister did. In order to begin her mission she is told to "Act as if ye believe and see what happens." I think I am going to start using that motto in my life. :)
I don't think this book is out yet but I got an uncorrected proof at the National Council of Teachers of English/ National Writing Project Meeting in Pittsburgh last fall. I am glad I picked it up. I plan to get some of her others now and check them out.
if you like young adult fantasy- pick it up!

This is one of my favourite books! I would most definitely reccommend reading "The Hunter's Moon", which was the first book in "The Chronicles of Faerie", "The Summer King" being the second. Following that is "The Light-Bearer's Daughter", and then "The Book of Dreams". There may be even more now, I'm not sure. The first two are my favourite, but I loved them all!

It sounds really good! I bought a book about faries at the Heathrow Airport called Heretic, about a girl that has been hiding in the fairy relm because she is trying to get away from being tried as a witch in 1610.

Cool! I've heard of this book, but didn't know what it was about. Sounds worth the read.

P.S. There used to be this great NPR show called Looseleaf Book Company that would do reviews of great Kids Books, and Children's lit in general. It was hosted by none other than Motel 6's Tom Bodett. It was a great show. I hear they lost their funding though. :(
